Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture takes over the National Museum of American History’s Carmichael Auditorium on Saturday to present a screening of “Traces of the Trade”. For this documentary, filmmaker Katrina Browne and nine of her relatives delve into their family’s painful history, tracing their ancestors, the DeWolfes, back to the 18th and 19th centuries, when they were active in the slave trade, possibly transporting as many as 10,000 West Africans across the Middle Passage in exchange for rum.

Upcoming Event: Yinka Shonibare MBE

image_1_486

Born in England in 1962 and raised in Nigeria, Yinka Shonibare currently lives and works in London, where he has gained international attention by exploring issues of race and class through a range of media that includes sculpture, painting, photography, and installation art. Adopting a richly complex, unconventional approach, Shonibare lampoons the concept of achieving status through what might be called cultural authenticity. His works, simultaneously innocent and subversive, address a range of cultural and historical issues and, in the process, blur the boundaries of design, ethnography, and contemporary art .

Yinka Shonibare will be at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC on November 12 to discuss his work:

Location: Hirshhorn Museum, Ring Auditorium, Washington, DC

Time: 7:00pm-8:00pm

Yinka Shonibare MBE will be on view from November 10, 2009-March 7, 2010.
